MessageSujet: Re: Mike Neer   Mike Neer EmptyMer 2 Fév - 8:50

I've put together a new book called "Bebop Lap Steel Guitar: An Introduction to Playing Bebop Tunes in C6 Tuning" and I'm very happy with the results. While the book is not a primer on improvisation, what it presents is a different approach to playing the lap steel guitar (a vertical approach) that uses several standard Bebop tunes to get you looking at the fretboard in a new way. Not only that, but you will be playing lines with your right hand that you never dreamed of. The material is challenging, but I believe that players of any level can benefit from giving the book a look. In addition to the melodies, which have been meticulously notated and tabbed, you also have the chord changes tabbed out for steel guitar.

All of the melodies can be played on a 6 string lap steel guitar tuned to C6; however, to get the most from the chord changes, an 8 string steel is recommended.

There is a series of exercises in the final section of the book, called "The Vertical Approach." You will learn new ways to play Major, Chromatic, Whole Tone and Diminished scales, as well as exploring something know to beboppers as "surround notes." These exercises will definitely make a difference in your playing.

I am working on videos for each of the tunes which will be ready soon (I'm anticipating them being done this week). These will be included to with all purchases and any advance purchasers will have priority access. Also included are the Tabledit files, so you actually listen to the MIDI playback of all of the tunes.

The 5 songs are:
Doxy (Sonny Rollins)
Straight, No Chaser (Thelonious Monk) Click here to listen
Oleo (Sonny Rollins)
Yardbird Suite (Charlie Parker) Click here to listen
Daahoud (Clifford Brown) Click here to listen

I am also going to have a number of these books printed up, in case anyone is interested in purchasing a copy. I will update you when these are available.

To purchase the e-book and Tabledit files (the video will be ready soon, I promise!),please go to my Lapsteelin' Blog for more information.

I have added Sol Hoopii's "Twelfth Street Rag" (1938 electric version) to my list of available tab/notation packages for lap steel guitar. This one features the C#min7 tuning of Sol's design and it is for 6 string steel guitar. This is an intense workout for the picking hand as well as the bar hand.

Have a listen to a recording I made of the tune yesterday: 12th St. Rag

My transcription is a note-for-note transcription of Sol's recording and I've laid it all out, including right hand picking, in the tab/notation. The video is a 16 minute demonstration of the 5 choruses of the tune played slowly. You have your choice of downloading a Quicktime package or MPEG (for Windows Media Player).

Also included is a rhythm track to play along with (although it is a brisk tempo!). I recommend working this one out with a metronome.

The price of this package is $10.95. A ton of work went into this one and I'm proud of it. To purchase, click HERE

Skiddle-Dee-Boo

I played a Clinesmith D-8 console and the usual suspects were used in this recording (Kay upright bass, Dunn acoustic guitar, box with brushes).
This one is a blast to play, but it is a challenge!
Speedy played it on his pedal Bigsby in F#9 tuning--the pedal raised the A# to B to give him an E6 tuning.
I adapted for non-pedal D9 tuning (very similar to C6).

This package (pdf of tab/notation, Tabledit, backing track) is available at http://www.steelinfromthemasters.com for $4.95.
That's a deal!
