Clarity and sustain in the upper register is where the differences between all wood guitars and formica guitars become distinct.......That is exactly why in the 70's, I switched from Sho-Bud to Emmons PP.......Each brand has desirable nuances and I believe Dad captured the best of both worlds in his design. With just the Sho-Bud, no volume pedal, straight into the amp, the Twin amp was the source of the dynamic compression problems we are hearing....The Bud had to be played hard through all of the amps I tried..........On any gig, having to play extremely hard on everything is not my preference.......I put on new strings and nothing changed..... ........What constitutes a "real" pedal steel guitar is a subjective call......I love the nuance of all brands.....I'm also aware of what's special about them and where they fall short of my musical mark.....I'll explain that remark,,,,,,,,,,For me when a guitar forces me to play with a single picking dynamic it becomes a limited musical experience......After a few years of trying to make the Bud work for where I was musically, and in their defense, they "were" trying to get the sustain and clarity of the Emmons guitar for many of us Bud players complaining at the time, by introducing aluminum necks and such...Anyways, they never got there, so I gave up fighting its dynamic weaknesses....I was influenced by the dynamic response of the guitars I played from time to time owned by friends Reinhard, Smith, Rugg, Hughey and others.....it was like a breath of fresh air when I turned in my Bud for the PP. Finally, I was free to play notes for a longer period without re striking at any strength from soft to hard....I could relax and let the PP sing like a voice for me.....The only things I missed from the Sho-Bud was the mid range and the pedal action......My Franklin got that back for me while maintaining the clarity and sustain above the twelfth fret that formica and aluminum necks get easily........We are very happy with the end result which is why we have not altered the design since the 70's.......Our guitar sounds like itself.....I also own two all wood Franklins to satisfy that grainy edge desire that I get when I sit behind a Bud or ZB...........I love the way this Sho-Bud sounds on the clip..... I really appreciate the loaned guitar...It made that trip a breeze.......
