I’ve recently added the 9th string half tone lower to my steel. Here is a little run in the key of A using that change. The close voicing lends itself to a quick little run idea that will take you from here to there in a hurry. Also look at the neat use of the A pedal and E lever combination(Just hold the A&B down). The (-) means lower ½ tone. Try playing it as quick triplets.

Beginners Notes #161-Ascending Movement Ideas
(_) = Alternate Chord Notice how a couple of these move around or against a single note. This is not a new thing. But it can be powerful when used in the right place at the right time. Find that place and time. Make it yours… 1_____________________:______________________:__________________________ 2_____________________:______________________:__________________________ 3_____________________:______________________:__________________________ 4_____________________:____5__4__3__1F_______:___5__5__3__3___(4F)__5___ 5____________(2)__3 ___:_____________1___5~~__:_________________________ 6___3__3B__4B(2)__3 ___:__________3______5~~__:_________3__3B__(4B)__5__ 7______3___4__________:_______4______________:_________________________ 8___3_________________:____5_________________:___5__5F_________________ 9_____________________:______________________:_________________________ 10____________________:______________________:_________________________
This is some fun stuff: Look at how they lay out on the neck physically (the patterns). Also note: These runs can be started anywhere along the run and stopped likewise, then paused along the run anywhere for accent and or expression. Try playing 3 notes then pause… Or four notes then pause… A different feel. Explore the possibilities. 1___________________________________________________________________________ 2___________________________________________________________________________ 3_______________________________________________________________5B__5--3_____ 4___________________________________________________5___6___7____________5~_ 5_____________________________4__5__4___5___6___7___5A__6A__7A__5A__5--3_____ 6_________________3__4__5__5B_______4B__5B__6B__7B_______________________5~_ 7_______________4____________________________________________________________ 8_______3__4__5______________________________________________________________ 9_____4______________________________________________________________________ 10__5________________________________________________________________________
Play with them, move them, change them and find what you can that will be useful to you. Discover that next great lick or run, these might trigger that idea. 1_______________________________________________________________________________ 2_______________________________________________________________________________ 3____________________________________________________________________________10_ 4___________________________________________________________________10___12_____ 5________________________________4__5__4A__5A__8__10__9A__10A__12A__10A__12A_10_ 6_______________________4__5__5B_______4B__5B__8__10__9B__10B__12B______________ 7__________________4__5_________________________________________________________ 8_____________4__5______________________________________________________________ 9_____3__4__5___________________________________________________________________ 10__5___________________________________________________________________________
