| Check out one of the coolest facets of the E9th tuning! It's the fact that so many of the same chords and notes are available at many different positions on the fretboard. A lot of very neat stuff is available on this tuning, even without all the most exotic knee levers, if you are willing to search for it, and...... you take the time to learn a few bar slants, 1/2 A pedal moves, explore a few non-standard grips etc. I've applied one of these riffs to a section of Sweet Memories, see below. | These chord sequences are easy to play and only scratch the surface of what's available by lowering the 9th E9th string a half tone and combining it with the E9th 3rd pedal and the E to F knee lever. Similary a lot of new changes are available by raising the C6th 6th string a half tone from E to F and lowering the 4th string a half tone. E9th Chord Sequence C6th Chord Sequence For more explanation of the C6th E to F change see my web page here and look at the explanation of the change in F open which shows the scale notes in including the 6th string root, maj7, 6th and 9 notes: C6th E To F Change Look here to hear these changes used in a song: Precious Memories in streaming MP3 format Here's some tab laying this all out: | |

| This is the complete C6 tab for the C6 intro and verse of Crazy that was recorded by me as a medley of Crazy and You Belong To Me. Lately I've been using the 1st string D to D# raise a lot. It's used in this tab and it acts a lot like the 1st string F# to G knee lever on E9th. You can easily play this song without it however! | I heard Chalker play this and it's similar to a riff I've heard John Hughey play also. You can strum some of the triad slides with your thumb to enrich the sound! Hear It! Tab in pdf format! | |

| When I first started playing E9th I wondered how so many experienced pickers got all those "C6th" sounds on E9th. I am talking about the classic C6th sounds of the 50's, 60's and 70"s. Today's modern players have blurred lines of distinction between these two tunings, playing the same fast pick blocked riffs with ease on either tuning. I've started work on a course for playing C6 sounds on E9th. Suffice it to say that I will be using my own arbitrary definitions of what is a 10 string E9th pedal tuning and what is a "C6" sound. Included in this tab are a few positions using: o E to Eb Knee lever o A/B Pedals Down o 1/2 depress of the A pedal o E to F knee lever o A pedal o 9th string D to C# knee lever Hear It! | Play it as slow as you have to in the beginning. Experiment with the fingering to find what works for you. I vary between Thumb/Index to Thumb/Middle finger variations of those. Hear It! Tab in pdf format! | |

| [quote="Greg Cutshaw"]This is just a common type of steel riff with the E to Eb knee lever on the fourth string kicked in to create a bit of dissonance to the sound. The result is something a bit more interesting than just kicking in the A/B pedals by themselves. Ecoutez ! Tab in pdf format!

| This is one take on how you can play Night Life on the E9th Tuning in the key of D. Many of the ideas presented here can be used in a lot of other songs too, so they are good to know. For example, the minor 7th chord that is available on strings 7,5,4,3 with pedals A,B down is pretty cool and doesn't require you to have the 9th string lower change. This is just my first take on this and I'm sure there will be some errors in the tab 1st time around. See the complete treatment on my web site for more info on the chord structure and an overview of the C6th version. There's also another easy approach to the chords shown on my web site that's not included here but I don't have a sound file for it. | Here's two simple uses for the 9th string lower and split tuning on E9th. The first one gives you another inversion of a 6th chord. The second one gives you an easy to play major 9th sound that will help you break out of the same old pedal sounds syndrome when playing the E9th neck.
