Chanos International Steel Guitar Festival

Hi Everyone

Last September, Basil Henriques announced that we were planning an International Steel Guitar Festival in Chanos-Curson, Drome. Well, the good news is that we have completed the formalities. We have a registered committee and an organisation – Chanos ISGF.

The ISGF will be held from 19 to 21 September. We are a non profit organisation with the aim of promoting the playing of the Steel Guitar and its music – in all its diverse forms. We have recently launched the latest version of our web site http://www.chanos-isgf.org and you can purchase your tickets on line. Please do – we need all the support you can give. This is the first of what will become an annual event. It is open to all players – so come along and play your guitar no matter what your standard of play or whether you are an amateur or professional.

This is the perfect opportunity to meet new players, make new friends and exchange ideas. We have had a lot of interest and encouragement from several sources but the most heartening has been from Steel Guitar France – so many thanks!

toute rencontre de ce genre est un plus
ce que j'aimerais savoir, c'est si y'a une téte ou des tétes d'affiches pour nous stimuler a y venir
pour le moment, si j'ai bien compris, c'est plutot une réunion entre steelers avec l'opportunité de jouer un p'ti set de 20 minutes
ce qui est trés bien n'est ce pas ?
mais y'aura t'il 1 ou des poids lourds pour nous attirer

N'étant pas à Charlieu, j'ai prévu d'y aller. Je ne peux malheureusement pas me ranger dans la catégorie des poids lourds

Pat and myself are starting the festivities off on Friday evening at 8:00pm with a set outlining the history of the Hawaiian Guitar and the Pedal Steel. Playing examples of the earliest to the modern styles, on a variety of guitars from each era..


We will be also playing on Saturday and Sunday at both of the venues each day, 2 spots Saturday and 2 spots Sunday.
As well, I will be conducting a seminar and discussion group on the aspects of Hawaiian Style Playing on Sunday from 11:00am to 1:00pm.. Giving some of the "Tricks of the Trade"..

We would love to attend Steelday at Charlieu but unfortunately we cannot because we live in the UK and will not be in France at that time. However we will be in Chanos from 13 March to 6 April and are planning to meet several people including Patrick Laffrat. If any of you would like to meet us, please email me to arrange a get together.

Regarding the Chanos ISGF, we are slowly developing some aspects of the Programme as you can see from Tam's post. I can confirm that Basil Henriques will be attending the festival and will open the proceedings on Friday evening with a demonstration of the history of the Steel Guitar - from Hawaiian Acoustic Steel to Country Pedal Steel. This is an entertainment not to be missed. On the Sunday, from 11:00 to 13:00, he will run a class on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar which will be free and available to all ticket holders. I am in the process of updating the website with this information so you won't find it there currently.

Already we have some very interesting players who have booked their tickes and accommodation and I have every reason to believe, at this early stage, that the event will be a great success.

I'll try to attend if I'm not here or everywhere for my job.

Je suis très content de voir que le Charlieu était un grand succès. Maintenant je dois me concentrer sur Chanos mais le travail vient toujours entre moi et mes plaisirs.

Étant pendant que l'autre fil au sujet de visiter Chanos (par certains des membres français le mois dernier) a été fermé à clef et destiné aux chambres fortes foncées profondes, je ressusciterai ceci, comme je pense qu'il est plein d'humour

Along with our friends, Rod & Rosemary, Digby and Chantal, Bernard etc. We also look forward to (hopefully) making a few new ones..




Methinks our friend below has had just a smidgen too much Châteauneuf-du-Pape !
Of course there are those who hate the pedal steel "that much", I'll be doing what I can to redress the balance and demonstrate it's place in Hawaiian Style playing, a la Jules Ah See, Billy Hew Len, Danny Stewart, the Tavares Bros. etc. I'll also be playing my Emmons over at the Country Venue

je ne pourrai pas venir à Chanos, je partirai ce W.E là en Belgique (tournée avec BOUSKIDOU pour les jeunesses musicales belges).... et je ne serai pas non plus à Drogheda pour les Steeldays d'Irlande... alors RDV pour Charlieu 2oo9 ??????

après ce déluge de Samedi, (75 mm d'eau en 3h)
MAISON ET SALLE DES FETES INTACTES !!....

la Ferme des Denis est aussi un peu sur les hauteurs, c'est mieux en pareil cas.
un partie de Chanos a été très touchée par contre..(images TV)

On rame déjà tous pas mal pour être au point pour le 20, on ne viendra pas en barque, c'est promis..

Je ne vois pas Basil sur les photos. Il devait bien être présent? Quid du programme présenté?

Basil a eu un empechement de dernière minute (blessure à l'épaule) donc ça commençait mal pour Digsby et Chantal.
au final, les prestations étaient supères: Digsby, hula Blues, Rod, etc... le temps est passé bien vite !
la première pierre a été posée ce week end pour faire de ce festival un évènement à la hauteur de la motivation de Digsby et son comité.

J'avais causé hier soir, mais tout a disparu.... Je disais donc....
J'y étais à Chanos, et c'était formidable.
J'étais super content de revoir Nanard Glorian et Tam que j'avais vus à Orry et de faire la connaissance d'Eric Want, de PatLaff, et de Michel Bastide, fondu de musique Hawaïenne venu avec une steel de sa fabrication et qui jouait bien et juste.
Même s'il ny avait pas de master class ni de grande pointure de la steel, (petite pensée pour Basil Henriques victime d'un tennis elbow pour avoir dû porter sa steel sur une trop grande distance) c'était très enrichissant de jouer devant les autres, et de les regarder jouer à leur tour et les encourager.
Il y avait quand même de supers joueurs, Rod King, Ron Kew et Loic Navennec sont de "grands amateurs". Ces rencontres sont un grand moment d'échange et d'amitié et on en revient regonflé. A bientôt donc dans une rencontre!!!

Bonjour, j'ai essayé de conduire mais après 150km I couldn' t prennent le risque d'accident dans la voiture tellement regrettablement que j'ai dû remettre à plus tard. MAIS la fois prochaine à coup sûr. J'ai Capsulitis adhésif Je me récupérerai bien espère. Pat et moi sont désolés que nous ayons manqué rencontrer nos nouveaux amis en France.

C'est un moment magique que je viens de passer .
Je n'avais jamais eu la chance de rencontrer autant de steel guitaristes en meme temps...

Tout a ete deja dit par Jean-Jacques, Bernard, Patrick, Tam...
Quoi dire d'autre sinon que j'ai ete impressionne par tout le monde, chacun dans son style et sa gentillesse... Pour moi il y aura un avant et un apres Chanos...

Merci a Guy et a toutes les personnes qui ont assure avec efficacite toute la gestion et les repas de ces trois jours.

Je n'ai qu'un regret, c'est de ne pas avoir rencontre Pat et Basil dont j'apprecie beaucoup ce qu'ils font.

Un petit moment inatendu:
Avec Guy et Jean-Pierre, nous avons evoque des souvenirs des annees 60, a l'epoque, je faisais mes etudes a 20 km de Chanos: a Bourg les Valence...
